Outside the box

Quick blip:

Here is some new technology for the classroom librarian.  My own goal is to become more global with teaching strategies as well as a life long learner.  This is a great way to help in that goal's attainment!  Check it out!

Get out of my dreams! Get into my car...

That use to be one of my favorite songs growing up.  My dad and I worked together as a team to win a prize on the radio and we won! Billy Ocean's single of that song we received after a drive to the city. When we finally arrived home I got to listen to it on the..wait for it.... wait for it.... Record Player. That was less than thirty years ago. Times have changed and are more rapidly changing by the years.  I am typing on a laptop that also has touch screen and motion control capabilities.  It folds backwards, I can watch music videos, find the lyrics, look up biographical information about the singer or find satirical material of music to name a few, and just on that topic alone! That is a big jump from the record player.

Hey Midsummer Night Owls.  It has been awhile and a journey.  Hope you enjoyed the intro, I shall return to that point in just a bit, I promise.  The summer was relentless.  Illness plagued and I was bedridden.  But by miracle, perseverance and determination I was able to complete all my librarian classes! The liberation I felt! I had done it and proven to myself that I CAN do it more importantly. Then the blow that did crush me for awhile: the firecracker of my life and the matriarch of my family, I called her Mamaw, conquered this life and has gone on to what's next. It nearly broke me, if it weren't for her voice and firecracker spirit she lent me.  I had come upon a wall and I swung and clung and pounded my way over to the other side.

On the other side of that wall I found my favorite kind of weather: fog.  This is where I get back to my intro.  This is the most exciting time of my life-or anyone who has found their dream and are willing to take chances to live it, the next steps are unknown.  As is the future as we as a global community continually improve, upgrade or enhance our lives.  The knowledge that we draw upon to to remix, create and obtain something new which is then drawn upon again by future generations is what we as librarians are called to curate.

My philosophy of this prestigious job, what I see myself and how all libraries should thrive towards are stewards of knowledge.  We care for our patrons and not only help serve them in their quest in learning but we aim to make lifelong learners by not just feeding them the meal, per say, but teaching them how to fish.  We protect and are responsible for everything that the library has to offer its patrons and protect patrons rights as well.   If there is a challenged book we will do our research to ensure it is appropriate and fair to keep it without discrimination.  Patrons privacy, even the privacy of students should be protected. Finally we manage, curate, catalog the collection that, in truth, belongs to the public.  We collect data to keep our collection relevant.  We extend our hours and strive for limitless check outs.  I see my first project when hired and it is going to be limitless! If we limit students we should not be surprised they come back limited

I want to be apart of what sparks new inventions, sparks our next generation into dreaming big and learning ways to improve our world.  There are many elements I want to implement in my collection. I am a lover of reading, science, history and the arts. The world is my oyster, my view and my future. With increasing technology the world becomes ever smaller and the effects of pollution from many of our creations is killing us slowly. I want a focus of clean energy in my collection, labs where students can create their own solar panels, test magnetic generators and grown an indoor garden that could give healthy additions to the schools lunch menu.  My strength is dreaming big as well as my curse or downfall.  These are but dreams that I want to get out to reality!

In future bloggings I am going to post some things I have worked on as well as my digital resume I am excited to create. The fog is lifting and my future awaits!

The Reoccurring Dream

I love this blog. I keep coming back to great tidbits that I left over the months.  I plan on starting a list of all the different sites I have been introduced to, not all of them have I been able to explore as much as I would like.  So I am making it my goal to go through each and give some feedback on them here. Since I love lists, I thought that would be the best way to accomplish my goal.  This will take some time since I am still in school and trying to accomplish homework as well! Blendspace and Livebinders are the beginning of my list. Until then.

It has been too long!

I just wanted to come on here and talk about what all has conspired since being here last.  I have learned so much about the curation tools! My favorite is Pearltrees so far, but OpenBinder is fantastic as well. These sites have the ability to let you curate any lessons into easy visual units that students can easily navigate.  It allows the instructors to provide websites that have been approved and the students the ability to investigate at their own pace.

This is one I am working on currently for a unit on the Depression.  Hope you enjoy the new knowledge!
